Teaching Reading Sourcebook

This resource provides information on four components of an effective vocabulary program. Teachers will be able to identify four criteria to use when selecting vocabulary words for ELLS, three basic instructional strategies including graphic organizers for developing word meaning knowledge, identify three effective word-learning strategies, and become familiar with instructional strategies for fostering word consciousness.

Academic Language and English Language Learners

Building Literacy for English Language Learners

This toolkit for “Building Literacy for English Language Learners” could be used for a variety of different levels and not only for ELL students. There are a number of graphic organizers within the toolkit that students can use to help track language acquisition and word groups. Of particular note is Appendix 5.2 p.5: “Common Morphemes from Content-Area Vocabulary” (science, math, social studies, and language arts). This page could be used as a handout when teaching key morphemes in specific subject areas.
