Abstract
The Engagement Power and Social Action (EPSA) research team worked with Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) to conduct an evaluation of the Restorative Practices program across 47 middle schools in the district. Restorative Practices is an approach to discipline and school culture that shifts away from punitive measures towards building positive relationships and addressing behavior issues through support in dialogue and community building. Data from focus groups with representation from each school district were used in combination with pre-existing program documentation, district-collected implementation and outcome metrics, school climate data, and district files for student conduct , to assess if the program was meeting its intended goals of reducing disciplinary referrals, reducing suspensions, and improving school climate. Findings demonstrate mixed-to-favorable outcomes for the program including an increase in referral action codes labeled as restorative practices and a reduction in racial disparities in suspensions. The EPSA team recommended additional investment in implementation and streamlining documentation processes to further maximize positive outcomes. This presentation will focus on our process of working collaboratively with MDCPS staff, our team approach to completing the project in a short timeframe, and our findings with implications for action.
