Athletic and Academic Identity amongst Division I Student-Athletes
Abstract
Less than 1 percent of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) student-athletes are drafted into professional leagues such as the NFL and NBA (Dalton & Obaid-Chinoy, 2018). This stark reality highlights the importance of developing collegiate student-athletes’ academic identity in order to ensure a more successful transition out of sport. An informal study with Division I student-athletes will determine participants’ athletic identity scores using the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS) and compare it to their academic identity scores using a modified version of the AIMS measure. Implications for student-athlete academic development will be discussed.
