With its authoritarian structure, strict dress code, emphasis on silence and order, negative reinforcement, practice of walking in lines, the loss of individual autonomy, abridged freedoms, and no voice in decision making- structures of schools more closely resemble penitentiaries than spaces for learning and innovation. Five facts to face in beginning to understand the schools-to-prison pipeline:

  1. Disciplinary policies in schools are often the first step, enforce serve consequences to students often without regard to the severity of the infraction.
  2. Schools have become increasingly overzealous in their arrest-making. For example, two dozen middle school children were handcuffed then suspended for participating in a cafeteria food fight.
  3. Standardized testing has become a breeding ground for unfair practices. High stakes has put pressure on schools to push out low performing students in effort to raise average scores and funding.
  4. The juvenile justice system is not focused on rehabilitation. Once involved in the justice system, chances of attaining a higher education are bleak and having criminal record sets stage for being denied funding for further schooling.
  5. Minorities and those with learning disabilities are at risk for the school-to-prison pipeline.
