Biography
Kativon Makary was born and raised in Los Angeles by Egyptian immigrants. She is part of the Engagement Power and Social Action Research (EPSA) team at the University of Miami with her advisor, community engaged scholar, Dr. Scotney Evans. Kat has experience researching the process of conscientization among white anti-racist organizers and engaging in participatory action research with refugee and immigrant-led grassroots organizations. She is a fourth year PhD student in the Community Well-Being program who is interested in how impacted communities organize against housing injustice, the prison industrial complex, and the school to prison pipeline. She currently leads an advocacy team through Dade County Street Response to organize and educate the local community to act around issues at the intersection of homelessness, disaster relief, climate change, and gun violence. She loves poetry, nature, and God.
