This fact sheet is based on a study designed by the federal Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The study issued the first national survey of school mental health services, School Mental Health Services in the United States, 2002-2003. The survey was based on a representative sample of public schools and their school districts. The SAMHSA study demonstrated the integral role that schools play in identifying and meeting the needs of students for mental health services. The data from the study portrays that the need for services increased in nearly 70% of districts nationally. Simultaneously funding for services decreased or remained constant in over 70% of the districts.
