In this video segment channel 2 News Anchor Deana Silk reports on social promotion. Silk uses the story of a mother who made the choice to have her son repeat second grade to demonstrate that social promotion is detrimental to student achievement.  In the segment it was clear that the decision to have Conner repeat a year was due to his severe struggle with reading. Connor’s mother explains that repeating his second grade year enabled Connor to excel academically; he was more confidence and capable of doing the work presented to him. However, he was suffering socially, he was in effect, left behind. His mother stated that he was trying to make new friends but that it was hard for him and that he currently feels alone.
