Logan Square Neighborhood Association

Logan Square Neighborhood Association. (2009, May 14.). Kellogg’s Universal Breakfast

One of the simplest things that school systems can do is to make certain all students have a nutritious breakfast. Students who have a healthy breakfast have proven to score higher on standardized tests and have fewer discipline issues. A simple way to do this is to serve breakfast in the classroom, which only takes about 15 minutes. McAuliffe Elementary School and Logan Square Neighborhood Association, in Chicago, teamed up to bring Universal Breakfast to the students every morning. The result was that the students were in a better frame of mind to learn.

The schools had a good bit of success, including increased test scores and attendance. Many of the teachers discuss how hungry the students are when the come to school and how lethargic the students appeared before breakfast. The nutrition provided to them in the morning allowed them to take ownership of their health. The program was very simple to implement and has proven to be beneficial in multiple ways.
