Teaching Strategies

Explicit Instruction

“I learn more from it and I pay more attention to it than I used to back in my other classes.” - Julissa

The teacher directed portion is the explicit introduction and modeling of the target skill. In addition to explaining the skill, the teacher acts as a coach while the students collectively act in the learner role. The teacher directed provides the opportunity for the direct, explicit instruction of skills necessary for skill acquisition. Students are provided guidance and a model to follow when released to work collaboratively and later independently on the skill. This structure models expectations for the roles of a coach and a learner.

Peer Tutoring

“I like being the coach and being the learner because you learn more things about linguistics.” - Daniel

The Peer Tutoring component is the collaborative practice element of the lesson during which students follow a procedural facilitator. They take turns in the coach and learner roll, each being afforded the opportunity to apply the skill previously modeled for them with the guidance and support of their peer. While students are working with their peers, they are getting meaningful practice. During this time, the teacher circulates the room to direct support to individuals and/or peers and monitor student progress as needed.
