What is AMP-IT-UP?

AMP-IT-UP for Reading

AMP-IT-UP [1], an empirically validated supplemental intensive reading program designed specifically for adolescent struggling readers to be delivered in intensive reading classes. AMP-IT-UP can be implemented in either a daily 60-minute class period, or an alternating block schedule class period for 110 minutes and does not replace language arts or other core classes.

Previous research conducted with AMP-IT-UP [2] demonstrates that it can be effectively and feasibly implemented by district employed teachers, when provided with the appropriate training and support. More importantly, whether implemented under ‘routine’ or ‘ideal’ conditions, middle school SWRDs have made significant and large effect sizes gains in word identification, spelling, fluency, and comprehension skills with AMP-IT-UP [3].

I like learning about linguistics and I know if I improve on it I can improve my skills in reading.

It’s really easy to explain the program to someone who is new, especially if they are just beginning reading.

The master review reminds you of everything you’ve done so you don’t forget. I like it because it gets us to stand up and wakes us up instead of sitting down at our desks repeating everything the teacher says.

What I like about the program is that I learn to read new words, and how to use them.

I learn more from it and I pay more attention to it than I used to back in my other classes.

I like being the coach and being the learner because you learn more things about linguistics.

You learn how to build words even if you don’t know them [by] using things like tense, lax, neutral, silent.

It improved my reading skills because before I didn’t like reading because I didn’t know how to pronounce the words and now when I’m in the class now I know how to pronounce the words and it’s easier and now reading for me is super fun.

I’m more proud of myself, more confident so I can read in front of the class.

I feel proud of myself because now if my mom tells me: “can you read this?” now I could say yes.
