IN THE
Classroom
Whole Lesson
“I like learning about linguistics and I know if I improve on it I can improve my skills in reading” - Nicholas
Each lesson follows a gradual release of responsibility from the teacher to the students. Lessons begin with the Master review during which previous lessons are reinforced and reviewed using choral response with the teacher.Next, during the teacher directed segment, the teacher introduces and models the target skills. Students are then released to work collaboratively using an adaptation of Fuchs’s Peer Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS). Independent application occurs at the end of each lesson, during which time the teacher provides feedback for each student.
Master Review
“The master review reminds you of everything you’ve done so you don’t forget. I like it because it gets us to stand up and wakes us up instead of sitting down at our desks repeating everything the teacher says.” - Ryan
The Master Review is a high energy routine which uses oral prompts and visual gestures that promote retention and mastery of skills taught in previous lessons.Beginning each lesson with a structured choral response has benefits beyond providing engagement during the students’ retention activity. Ongoing repetition of skills in combination with multi-sensory prompts assists the students in retaining the linguistic skills they learn over the course of the year. It also sets the tone for the day's lesson and gets them ready to learn.
