Dr. Vicky Burns, an alumna of the doctoral program in counseling psychology, recently received the honorable mention for the Mary Roth Walsh Teaching Award sponsored by the Society for the Psychology of Women (Division 35) of the American Psychological Association. This is the first time in the history of this award that an honorable mention has been bestowed upon an awardee. Dr. Burns teaches at the Center for Women’s and Gender Studies at Florida International University. The Mary Roth Walsh Teaching Award recognizes junior faculty who have devised a creative approach, exercise or assignment for increasing diversity in courses that focus on the psychology of women or gender. Diversity includes, but is not limited to race, class, ethnicity, sexual orientation and ablebodiedness.

Dr. Burns was chosen based on her newly created course on campus sexual assault prevention. She was honored during the Division 35 Awards Ceremony at the 2018 American Psychological Association Annual Convention in San Francisco, California.
