Visiting the Clinic

Getting Here

We are located on the second floor of the Max Orovitz building at the University of Miami in Coral Gables. The Max Orovitz building is on 1507 Levante Avenue, next to the Newman Alumni Center and across the street from the Department of Art and Art History. There are several metered parking spots available along Levante Avenue that cost $.25 for 12 minutes.

Before the Session

Once you arrive at the clinic, you will be greeted by our office manager. She will alert your therapist that you are here and invite you to have a seat in our waiting room. Your therapist will meet you there shortly.

The Beginning of the Intake Session

Your therapist will take you back to one of our 10 therapy rooms and give you some initial paperwork to fill out. You will be asked to fill out a personal history form and a screening questionnaire that will ask how you have been feeling in the last week. The purpose of these forms is to help your therapist better understand you and your situation.

Your therapist will also give you a copy of the fee agreement and the informed consent. You and your therapist will establish a fee using our sliding scale based on your gross monthly/yearly income and the number of people that you support. Once you have agreed on a fee, you will both sign an agreement establishing the fee for the remainder of treatment. Your therapist will also review the informed consent document with you. Included in the informed consent document are your rights as a client, what you can expect from us, and the limitations to confidentiality.

Unless otherwise specified, everything that you share with your therapist is confidential, meaning that your therapist will not share that information with anyone else without your permission. There are a few limits to confidentiality that your therapist will discuss with you in the first session. These include if you disclose abuse to the elderly or children, if you disclose plans to hurt yourself or others, and if the records are subpoenaed by the court.

The Intake Session

After discussing the more structural aspects of therapy, your therapist will likely spend the remainder of the session seeking to understand you and why you are coming to therapy now. Your therapist will ask you many questions and seek to answer any questions you have about therapy. One of the goals of the first session, or intake appointment, is for you to determine if the IIFC is a suitable place for you to address your concerns. Additionally, your therapist is making sure that the he or she and the IIFC have the resources needed to help you with your concern.

At the conclusion of your first session, you and your therapist may discuss days or times that work well for future appointments. Your therapist will not set a firm appointment with you for the next week, as all therapists are required to consult with their supervisors prior to accepting a new client into the IIFC. Following this meeting, your therapist will have a consultation with his/her supervisor to review your needs and the supervisor will decide if you can be accepted into treatment at the IIFC. Your therapist will call you back after consulting, which usually occurs within the week. There are times that a supervisor decides that someone is better treated at another agency or by another provider, depending on the needs of the client and the resources available at the IIFC. Our therapists are graduate students in training and may not have the level of proficiency needed to treat some individuals.

All of our therapists in the IIFC are supervised by licensed psychologists. As such, your therapist will need to discuss the information you share with his or her supervisor. To facilitate supervision, your therapist will inform you that your sessions will be video recorded. These videos will only be seen by your therapist, his or her supervisor, and members of his or her supervisory group. The information discussed in supervision will not be shared with anyone else outside of supervision.
