Believe in You (BIY): Miami community-based exercise program impact on physical activity levels in adult cancer survivors"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In 2020,\u00a0less than 50%\u00a0met\u00a0the\u00a0American Cancer Society (ACS) Physical Activity Guidelines on\u00a0aerobic or resistance\u00a0training, and\u00a0only 15% met both. The Believe in You\u00a0(BIY)\u00a0training program was created as part of the Sylvester\u00a0Comprehensive Cancer Center\u2019s Survivorship Program. It aims\u00a0to help cancer survivors\u00a0and their support person\u00a0prepare for and complete\u00a0a 5K race or 15-mile bike ride while promoting\u00a0longer-term\u00a0physical activity behavior changes\u00a0to meet\u00a0the ACS Physical Activity Guidelines\u00a0for Cancer Survivors.\u00a0<strong>Purpose<\/strong>:\u00a0To assess the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary impact of a pilot hybrid (in-person and online) program among cancer survivors and support persons physical activity levels.\u00a0<strong>Methods<\/strong>:\u00a0Adult cancer survivors and their support persons enrolled in the\u00a019-week\u00a0resistance and aerobic exercise training\u00a0program\u00a0from October 2022 to February 2023.\u00a0Exercise training included\u00a015 in-person and 13\u00a0remote sessions, plus four\u00a0complementary\u00a0nutrition classes.\u00a0Primary outcome was adherence and retention (attendance and exit surveys) with exploratory outcomes of physical activity (Godin Leisure-Time Exercise Questionnaire), body composition (BIA), hand grip strength, sit-and-reach, and blood pressure.\u00a0<strong>Results<\/strong>:\u00a0Nine\u00a0participants (six\u00a0survivors,\u00a0three\u00a0support persons) were enrolled, and\u00a0eight (five survivors, three support persons)\u00a0completed the program. Average age was 55 years\u00a0with an\u00a0average BMI of 29.\u00a0In exit interviews,\u00a0100%\u00a0indicated\u00a0high feasibility\u00a0and acceptability,\u00a0noted\u00a0feeling supported and engaged with high satisfaction of in-person training\u00a0sessions.\u00a0Attendance\u00a0of in-person sessions was 56% and remote was 26%. Total leisure activity score increased at the end of the program (83.3% were active, 16.7% were moderately active, and 0% were insufficiently active) compared to baseline (44.4% were active, 22.2% were moderately active, and 22.2% insufficiently active). No changes were observed in the other exploratory parameters.\u00a0<strong>Conclusions<\/strong>:\u00a0The BIY program was\u00a0feasible,\u00a0acceptable,\u00a0and\u00a0preliminarily\u00a0improved physical activity in\u00a0cancer survivors and their care person\u00a0over the course of the 19-week program.
