Dr. Blaine Fowers

Professor, Educational and Psychological Studies

Dr. Blaine Fowers is a professor of counseling psychology in the Department of Educational and Psychological Studies. His area of expertise is the psychological study of virtue and flourishing from an Aristotelian perspective. He is what is known as theoretical psychologists, which has led him to focus his work at the nexus of philosophy and psychology. Dr. Fowers conducts theoretical and empirical research on virtue and flourishing. Based in part on this work, he was awarded the Joseph B. Gittler Award from the American Psychological Foundation for his contributions to the philosophical foundations of psychology.

Human Flourishing through Fairness and Kindness


This first session will be led by Dr. Blaine Fowers, together and his three doctoral research assistants who will give a brief presentation of their research findings on human flourishing or living richly and fully. Dr. Fowers and his team have been studying flourishing for over 20 years and have found many insights into how people live the best kind of human lives. They will present a down-to-earth way to understand flourishing through cultivating good relationships and meaning in life and will briefly present the key results of three studies that indicate that this ideal is accessible to ordinary people through developing the characteristics of fairness and kindness. The team will conclude with a brief exercise that will give audience members some ways to cultivate kindness in their lives.
