18th Annual Holocaust Teacher Institute
In 1994, the Florida legislature mandated the teaching of the Holocaust in the schools. The University of Miami and Miami-Dade County Public Schools are pleased to announce the 18th annual Institute in Holocaust Studies designed specifically to meet the needs of teachers who wish to teach the Holocaust and its lessons to be learned for today’s students. This 4 day intensive course will provide the teacher/participant with materials, strategies and resources to ensure that the important lessons of the Holocaust are not forgotten and will be passed on from generation to generation.
The Director, teacher and facilitator of the program, Dr. Miriam Klein Kassenoff, is a Holocaust educator, speaker, and co-author with Dr. Anita Meyer Meinbach of the books, “Memories of The Night: A Study of the Holocaust”, and “Studying the Holocaust Through Film and Literature”. In addition, Dr. Klein Kassenoff, who fled Nazi Europe when she was a small child, is a member of The International Hidden Child/Child Survivor Organization and is the Education Specialist for Holocaust Studies for the Miami-Dade County Public Schools in Miami, Florida.
There will be historian/scholars as guest presenters as well as Holocaust survivor(s) present at the Institute giving 1st person testimony and interacting with the participants.
The goal of this Institute will be to provide knowledge and a framework for teachers in preparation for teaching the lessons of the Holocaust by encouraging students to develop character, compassion and civility in their daily lives.
Design of The Institute
The Institute will take place, June 11-14, 2019 at the Newman Alumni Center located on the campus of the University of Miami. The sessions will follow a format of historical lectures each morning by a visiting scholar of the Holocaust on the following topics:
- History of Anti-Semitism; Nazi Racial Ideology;
- The Development and Implementation of the Final Solution;
- Life and Death in the Ghetto;
- Resistance Movements;
- Gentile Rescue during the Holocaust;
- The Aftermath and Impact on Survivors and Their Children Today.
Afternoon sessions will focus on instructional strategies related to the content presented in the morning sessions.
Instruction materials will be distributed to each participant for use with their students upon return to the classroom.
All sessions will meet the standards and criteria of the mandate to teach the Holocaust in the state of Florida in the school system.
A visit to the Holocaust Memorial in Miami Beach, Florida may be included as part of the week’s session for purposes of understanding the Memorial’s use as a major teaching resource.
Participants will keep a written journal of response and plan a 3-week lesson unit on Teaching the Holocaust for their classroom use when they return to their schools. A specific follow-up session will be agreed upon during the seminar by all participants.
Teachers must apply on-line through Miami-Dade County Public Schools-My Learning Plan. Jewish Day School & Private School teachers are encouraged to attend and should fill out an application and fax to the number below.
The Institute is open to Social Studies, Language Arts, Media Specialists & Art Teachers, grades 4-12. The Institute is open to teachers in Jewish Day School programs, as well as those from out of town working in the field of Holocaust Education.

Glazer & Lorton Writing Institute
The Glazer & Lorton Writing Institute is a joint professional development effort of the University of Miami and Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS). Named after Zelda Glazer and Eveleen Lorton, two of the original co-founders, the Writing Institute has served M-DCPS teachers and their students since 1984. Part of the magic of the Writing Institute lies in its philosophy that in order to be an effective teacher of writing, teachers do just that; they write. They learn about writing from some of the country’s leading experts and then they write and share what they have created with their classmates. Each day brings new presenters and new purposes for writing. Each day there are more reasons for writing, for sharing, and for writing again.By the end of the two weeks, the participants choose their best piece to revise, edit, and then submit for publication in Sun Strokes, the Institute’s official anthology. Writing Institute participants claim that the greatest reward of the Institute is a renewed vigor for teaching.
