Breakthrough Miami offers rising 9th graders academic enrichment opportunities

Dr. Nicolas and Challenging Racism & Empowering Communities through Ethnocultural Research (CRECER) team partner with Breakthrough Miami to support and better understand youth academic outcomes.  Breakthrough Miami includes a School Year Program, a Summer Institute, a Mentoring Program and Alumni Database, and a Longitudinal Program. The School Year Program prepares rising 9th graders for high school courses as well as college coaching. The Summer Institute is an intensive summer program held on UM’s campus that also prepares rising 9th graders for high school courses. This summer program also encourages peer-to-peer instruction with the help of current UM students who are Teaching Fellows. The Mentoring Program and Alumni Database is mentoring network that links senior participants of Breakthrough Miami with new participants of the program. The Longitudinal Program follows participants beginning in 6th grade in order to evaluate the efficacy of the program. This comprehensive College Bound program provides both academic and social support to youth in our community, in order to prepare them for higher education.
