The Challenging Racism and Empowering Communities through Ethnocultural Research (CRECER) Team of UM’s School of Education, in partnership with the Community & Education Well-Being (CEW) Research Center and the Miami Coalition of Christians and Jews (MCCJ), hosted their annual Day of Dialogue. The topic for this year’s forum was Building Bridges Across Cultures: Promoting Education.
The Day of Dialogue discussed topics such as the intersection of culture and education, cultural differences, and student-teacher interaction, with the belief that closing the gap between school and home will ultimately improve student success by boosting student self-esteem, participation, and parent-family involvement, and reducing insensitive incidents at school. The event engaged perspectives from students, parents, and school staff, in order to identify ways to support educational achievement through culturally responsive practices. For more information, email dialogueonculture@gmail.com.

June 2-4, 2010

Dr. Aldarondo was invited by the Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation in the Department of Health and Human Services to participate in the Administration for Children and Families’ Thirteen Annual Welfare Research and Evaluation Conference.
This year’s conference featured a dynamic format blending presentations and structured interactions to create points of synergy among research, policy and practice. The agenda focused on the most current research on welfare, employment, and family self-sufficiency programs and policies, while drawing on lessons from past research and experience in the field. In particular, there were a number of conference sessions that highlighted issues of interest to the Latino community, including presentations by Ricardo Estrada of Instituto Del Progreso Latino on his organization’s approach to career pathways, a presentation on working with businesses in the Latino community by Juan Salgado, research on the implementation of the Hispanic Healthy Marriage Initiative, and a plenary talk by Yolanda Padilla on the effects of the recession on children, particularly migrant and immigrant children. Finally, a series of “roundtables” touched on topics of interest, including a roundtable on “Research Opportunities for Underserved Communities.”
